Vice President – Andy Wheatley’s letter

June 25th, 2009

Our Vice President Andy Wheatley sent a letter to the Chairman and asked him personally to read it out as last night’s AGM, the contents of the letter are as follows :-

I have recently met with Steve Howard (who was our first Chairman) and whilst credit has gone to me with regards to starting the club itself, without Steve going to the Hospital trust and the Phoenix club for help and assistance financially, without this we would not be able to get the club off the ground.

I remember starting off with a minibus and upto 4 coaches per season, unfortunately Steve had to come off the Committee due to work commitments, I remember him saying to me one night in the Phoenix Club, he pointed to Kevin, and said “That’s the man you need to take the club forward”.

Joel Mason took the helm for a short while before Kevin was approached and accepted the invitation. One of Kevin’s first jobs was to approach Liverpool F.C. and try to obtain more tickets for home matches, he obviously realised the support there was in the Town and County.

He approached the Committee with a view to running a full 49 seater coach to evry match, at the time there were a couple of objections from the Committee, more so due to hesitancy, but the motion was carried and I think since this moment the club has never looked back.

We had a period of instability a few seasons ago and I can tell you that the actions which Kevin took, ably supported by both Mike Langmaid and Dan Holland has put the cluib where it is today, when other people came up to me and said that within a year the club would go bankrupt, well that is far from the truth, in fact it’s just the opposite, and I know the Liverpool Supporters Club (Grimsby) Branch has got a very bright future.

Finally, regrettably I will not be travelling thatmuch to Anfield next season, my helath has deteriorated during this last year and I cannot possibly attend the number of matches that I have been doing, unfortunately the lady who looks after me is in the same position too.

The season because of the credit crunch, I know times will be hard for us all, with people sturggling for jobs and those that have jobs, getting time off work, but our supporters club is in a very strong position indeed.
